How we calculate the "biggest gap today"
Every time a shopper searches a fragrance on ScentFinder, we store the live total price (product price + delivery) quoted by each UK retailer for that exact listing. The "biggest gap today" line is computed directly from that data — it is not a marketing estimate.
- Gather today's listings. We take every PriceSearch record timestamped to the current calendar day. (If no searches have run yet today, we fall back to the most recent tracked listings so the figure is never blank.)
- Find each fragrance's spread. For each fragrance, we take the highest total price and the lowest total price across its retailer listings, then subtract the two.
- Surface the largest spread. The fragrance with the biggest spread is shown, with the gap in pounds and the fragrance name.
Prices include delivery and are ranked by total cost per 100ml, so the figure reflects what a shopper would actually pay — not headline product prices that hide shipping.
This figure is currently computed client-side from the cached search feed as a placeholder. A dedicated server-side aggregation query is on the roadmap to compute it across all tracked listings in real time.
